Advice on Choosing a House Style

STREAMLINED MODERNS
If you are in the market for a house style that is new and different, or that incorporates innovative design, then contemporary is the way to go for you. Here are details on two variations of the modern theme:

contemporary house

Contemporary: Contemporary homes usually contain more angles and bold geometric shapes than are found in traditional-styled homes. Contemporary homes typically have an abundance of glass-whether it is in window walls, bayed windows, skylights or clerestories-which also means these homes offer an abundance of sunlight cast into the interior. Asymmetrtical design and little ornamentation also characterize the style. Interior layouts are often very open and more interesting than in traditional homes, because of unusual angled walls, hallways and rooflines. These homes can be more expensive to build than traditional homes, depending on the amount of innovative or unusual details included. Shown: plan #P-7663-3A, 3D

Florida Contemporary: A variation of the Contemporary style is the Florida Contemporary one-story home. These homes usually have stucco exteriors accented with pastel colors such as pink, teal or blue. There are also touches of elements found in the Spanish/Mediterranean style, such as sprawling interior layouts and some use of archways. Florida Contemporary homes have less angular and more fluid lines than Contemporary homes that give them a "softer," more easy-going feel. Shown: plan #HDS-99-176

The label "Transitional" home often refers to suburban homes that blend several styles together and so cannot be categorized as strictly traditional or contemporary. Sometimes, transitional also refers to homes that display traditional details outside, such as a country style porch and shutters, but that have a modern layout within.

In trying to decide on a home style, think about the houses you've lived in-- which ones did you like the best and why? And think about your reactions to homes you've seen in your travels: what kinds do you remember as being the most inviting and attractive? Happy House Hunting!
